How can I get an allocation table of a partition

Posted by Chris

I'm an absolutely newbie of the linux kernel and I'm not finding a starting point to my problem.

I'm wondering, if it's possible to get a table of the used/unused memory of a partition, so I can choose the biggest free area whereto write my data. (My question includes, how can I write to a certain area of a partition winking smiley )

Could you recommend me a guide or tutorial, how I can acquaint myself with this topic?

Thank you in advance
