8 bits equal 1 byte, so why 32bits equal 4gb?

8 bits equal 1 byte, so why 32bits equal 4gb?

2^8 = 256 different values (0-255, for example)
255 = 1111.1111b -> all bits set

2 ^ 32 = 4294967296

I know that if 4294967296 is in bytes, then it's equal to 4gb, but I don't know why 4294967296 is considered bytes. ;-(
