I am running ubuntu 12.10 and just downloaded the free vmware player.

the vmware player first complains that I need the kernel headers for 3.5.0-21-generic . so, now I am apt-getting them.

of course, the vmware authorization is broken, so typing in my root password does not work. I need to run it at least once from a root-ed terminal shell.

eventually, this works.

but...isn't vmware a good friend of linux? why aren't all the hooks they need into the kernel already in the kernel, and everything else is in userland, so that the vmware player would run just like any other application?
